CNN —It appeared that Kimberly García of Team Peru had absolutely smashed a world record in the 20km racewalk event at the 2023 Pan American games – until it was revealed that the course had been measured incorrectly. Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesThe corporation acknowledged that it hired Mr. Ithurralde, but only after he was appointed for duty by the APA. The final classification of the results still stands, meaning that García and her fellow competitors are permitted to keep their medals. Ranking points used for qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics are handed out based on race times and finishing position – which the athletes who participated in Sunday’s race will now not receive. “I have never seen anything like that before,” Canada’s Evan Dunfee, who competed in the men’s race, told Reuters.

"Tokyo I definitely expected that to be the end of my career," Twichell, who finished seventh in Tokyo, told Reuters. "It was a tough lead up to Tokyo having the Games delayed a year by COVID and I just felt like I was kind of physically and mentally done and was excited to start a family. Twichell arrived in Santiago hoping for gold but unsure of her form after modest training times and going up against a strong field. "That is what I was definitely hoping for but I didn't know to be honest," said Twichell. SANTIAGO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Peru's Kimberly Garcia won gold in the Pan American Games women's 20 kilometre race walk on Sunday but her time was voided after it was discovered the course was several kilometres short. Ecuador's Glenda Morejon took silver and Peru's Evelyn Inga bronze after completing a route which athletes believe was about 3km short. With women's event completed and the men's race about to get underway organisers delayed the start for over an hour to quickly remeasure the route to the official distance. Ecuador's Alexander Hurtado would win the men's gold in 1:19.20 just four seconds ahead of world championship bronze medallist Caio Bonfim of Brazil. "The expert commissioned by APA, Mr. Marcelo Ithurralde, did not take accurate measurements of the route the athletes took during the race.

A silver medal came with a bonus prize with every fighter in the finals having secured a quota spot for the Paris Olympics. In the women's 75-kilogram Canada's Tammara Thibeault added Pan Am gold to her world and Commonwealth Games titles with a unanimous 5-0 decision over Panama's Atheyna Bylon. "Out of all the tournaments I've been to, I've been able to capture gold and I was missing Pan Ams," said Thibeault. Andrade and MacNeil take Pan Am Games spotlight

With marquee names in short supply, Olympic champions MacNeil and Andrade commanded the Pan Am stage, the Canadian tying American Gabi Albiero for first in women's 50 metre freestyle while Andrade soared to the top of the podium in the vault. Simone Biles aside, Andrade might just be the most intriguing athlete competing in her sport in Santiago. Biles may be recognised as the greatest gymnast of all-time but Andrade is the queen of the vault, holding the Olympic, world championship and now Pan Am Games crowns on the apparatus. MacNeil's fourth win in Santiago tied the record for most gold by a Canadian swimmer at a Pan Am Games while her six total medals (four gold, a silver and bronze) also equalled a single Games national mark. Chile enjoyed their best day of the Panamerican Games scooping up three gold to push their total to five while Argentina's struggles continued.

REUTERS/Ricardo ArduengoSAO PAULO, Nov 16 (Reuters) - The cholera situation in Haiti continues to worsen while COVID-19 cases rose over the past week, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said on Wednesday. Haitian health authorities have confirmed over 700 cases of cholera and 144 cholera-related deaths since early October, and are investigating more than 7,000 suspected cases, PAHO Director Dr. Carissa Etienne said. The Americas are facing a “triple threat” of respiratory diseases, as COVID-19, Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) burden the region and its health systems, PAHO said. There was a 17% rise in COVID-19 cases, and deaths increased in South America and Central America over the past week, Etienne said. Although the Americas are still the region most impacted by monkeypox, PAHO said cases have fallen in most of the severely affected countries.
